Status report for project Development of a genetic test for "midline defect" in cats We have so far sequenced three cat families where "midline defect" occurs in the offspring. In these three families there were 5 affected kittens, their parents and a healthy sibling. We have also sequenced a further 16 unrelated healthy control animals. In two of the families, the defective kittens look more alike, while the third family has several special features. Our preliminary analyzes suggest that several genomic regions may be involved in the development of the midline defect. But this result could also be due to the fact that we currently have too few animals to compare. However, one chromosomal region overlapped between the families with more different defects, which is positive. Therefore, we plan to collect more sick and healthy cats to try to get a clearer genetic picture. So far, we have analyzed too limited material to be able to draw any firm conclusions. We also plan to autopsie some of the kittens to try to find out if they carry hidden defects inside their bodies. This can help classify the kittens and can in turn lead to clearer genetic results. Hope more cat owners get in touch about samples for sequencing so we can solve the mystery of what causes this very problematic genetic defect. How to send in material, click here. Hur du skickar in material, klicka här. Important message from SLU More kittens with midline defect needs to be sequenced, as well as the parent animals and healthy siblings. Please spread this among your fellow breeders.See instructions here on how to submit kittens and blood tests to SLU.
New update Gabriella is writing the final report. The defect seems to be more complex than they had hoped for, so they are in great need of continuing the research. So they need more litters, both healthy (dead for other reasons) and defective kittens. Please send these to SLU (if the cat owner is interested, of course?) Annika Hollender works in the group with the project, she is a veterinarian from Germany (Hanover). Feel free to contact her with your questions..annika.hollender@slu.se Ny uppdatering Gabriella skriver slutrapporten just nu. Update from SLU Nothing has happened with the project since recieving SEK 500,000 in support from Maj Johnson's fund. There are several important projects that must first be completed, but it is expected to start the sequencing by the summer of 2022. Leslie Lyons contributes with genome from healthy cats. These are needed to be able to compare with the genome of midline affected kittens.
Financial support The Midline project at SLU has been granted SEK 500,000 in support from Maj Johnson's fund. Now we hope that a test can be developed soon. Help needed! The researchers are now very close to find the gene for MD, now they need som fast information as they are about to ask for more money for their research here in Sweden. We’ve made a form for you to fill and of course share with your fellow breeders. This is to all breeders of burmese or any other breed who has MD https://forms.gle/EzPcSSh3pWECQwzg8 The data will be collected tomorrow 16 of may Hjälp behövs Forskarna är nu mycket nära att hitta genen för MD, nu behöver de snabbt mer information eftersom de ska söka mer pengar för sin forskning här i Sverige.
EDTA blood test needed We would like some help from you regarding the collection of control samples on Burmese cats! There is a need to get more samples for good controls. Can you help to spread this info so it might be possible to finish the project? Maybe you should visit your vet for a vaccination in the near future and might want to send a blood test (EDTA tube) at the same time to the research?1-2 ml of blood is sufficient, or up to the label of the tube. Attach a copy of the pedigree. The veterinarian should also check that it's the correct cat through ID verification. Updates from the US A whole genome sequence has been completed on at least one cat and researches are now looking for interesting DNA variants that may cause the problem. These Burmese are part of the 99 Lives Cat Genome Sequencing Project. Now it's easier to send samples within Europe Now breeders can contact Gabriella via e-mail and recieve the research group’s FedEx number. With that number they can send kittens / samples free of charge. Then SLU can track the shipment. The number is issued via email after the breeder confirmation that they really have a defective kitten.Gabriella. Gabriella.Lindgren@slu.se
